Ad Bowl Super Winner

The Super Bowl is an annual American football game that determines the champion of the National Football League (NFL). The contest is held in an American city that is chosen three to four years beforehand, usually in warm-weather or domed sites. Since 1971, the winner of the American Football Conference (AFC) Championship Game has faced the winner of the National Football Conference (NFC) Championship Game in the culmination of the NFL playoffs. Before the 1970 merger between the American Football League (AFL) and the National Football League (NFL), the two leagues met in a World Championship Game and Super Bowl III in 1969 was the first Super Bowl that carried the "Super Bowl" moniker at the time of the game. The NFC leads in Super Bowl wins with 23, while the AFC has won 21. Seventeen different franchises, including teams that relocated to another city, have won the Super Bowl. The NFL and AFL each won two World Championships.

The Pittsburgh Steelers have won the most Super Bowls with six championships (record 6-1), while both the Dallas Cowboys and San Francisco 49ers have five wins each (Cowboys 5-3; 49ers a perfect 5-0). Dallas has had the most Super Bowl appearances, playing in eight. The Buffalo Bills, Denver Broncos, and Minnesota Vikings each have lost a record four Super Bowls. Buffalo and Minnesota are both 0–4 in the Super Bowl.

Super Bowls by game

Numbers in parentheses in the table are Super Bowl appearances, as of the date of that Super Bowl and are used as follows:

  • Winning team and Losing team columns indicate the number of times that team has appeared in a Super Bowl.
  • Venue column indicates number of times that stadium has hosted a Super Bowl.
  • City column indicates number of times that that metropolitan area has hosted a Super Bowl.

Super Bowl appearances by team

Teams with no Super Bowl appearances

  • NFL league champions prior to Super Bowl I in the 1966 NFL season:
    • Detroit Lions - NFL champions in 1935, 1952, 1953, and 1957; appeared in the NFC Championship Game in 1991
    • Cleveland Browns - NFL champions in 1950, 1954, 1955, and 1964; appeared in six other NFL championship games in 1951, 1952, 1953, 1957, 1968, and 1969 and in three AFC Championship Games in 1986, 1987, and 1989
  • Jacksonville Jaguars, 1995 expansion team; appeared in two AFC Championship Games in 1996 and 1999
  • Houston Texans, 2002 expansion team; yet to appear in the NFL playoffs.

Several teams have Super Bowl droughts longer than Jacksonville's and Houston's. The Kansas City Chiefs and New York Jets have not appeared in the Super Bowl since the AFL–NFL merger in 1970. The most recent Super Bowl appearance for the following teams was after the AFL-NFL merger, yet prior to the 1995 regular season: the Minnesota Vikings (most recently appeared in Super Bowl XI in 1977); Miami Dolphins (Super Bowl XIX in 1985); Cincinnati Bengals (Super Bowl XXIII in 1989); Washington Redskins (Super Bowl XXVI in 1992); Buffalo Bills (Super Bowl XXVIII in 1994); San Diego Chargers (Super Bowl XXIX in 1995); and San Francisco 49ers (Super Bowl XXIX in 1995).

In addition, the following teams have had Super Bowl appearances, but their last championship occurred prior to 1966:

  • Philadelphia Eagles, appeared in Super Bowl XV and Super Bowl XXXIX. Last championship 1960.
  • Tennessee Titans, appeared in Super Bowl XXXIV. Last championship 1961 when the team was the Houston Oilers.
  • San Diego Chargers, appeared in Super Bowl XXIX. Last championship 1963.
  • Buffalo Bills, appeared in Super Bowls XXV, XXVI, XXVII, and XXVIII. Last championship 1965.
  • Arizona Cardinals, appeared in Super Bowl XLIII. Last championship 1947 when they were the Chicago Cardinals, the second longest stretch without a championship of any American professional sports team and only beaten by the Chicago Cubs, who last won the World Series in 1908.
