Fat fetishism is a paraphilia involving fetishization of people, usually women, who are fat. A synonymous term is adipophilia , from adipose tissue, a medical term for body fat.
Fat fetishism is distinct from a mere sexual preference for fat partners, in that fat fetishists fetishize fat people.
Aspects of arousal
Fat fetishists typically find fondling of an overweight person's adipose tissue arousing. They may be aroused by the presence of a pannus or other hanging flaps of skin such as those on the thighs, arms, and back. Fat fetishists who are attracted to overweight men may be aroused by a fat man's larger breasts (a condition referred to in the medical literature as pseudogynecomastia). A male fat fetishist may enjoy inserting his penis between the deep folds of skin on an overweight person's body, and thrusting to orgasm in a practice similar to mammary intercourse.
Specific fetishes
Feederism
Feederism describes sexual relationships where both members obtain gratification from the gaining of body fat. Feederism refers to the acts of feeding, encouraging eating, or being served large quantities of food. Sexual pleasure is derived from the act of eating itself, and/or from the process of becoming fatter. Pleasure may be derived from specific changes to specific areas of the body.
The National Association to Advance Fat Acceptance specifically condemns feederism, claiming that the practice typically involves coercing a person to become larger. NAAFA compares this to the practice of coercing a person to become thinner and instead focuses on acceptance.
Terminology
Several terms refer to the roles adopted within the culture. A feeder is an individual who feeds another person. A feedee may be characterized as an individual choosing to gain weight with the aid of a feeder. A gainer is similar to a feedee, but gainers generally seek to gain by their own hand, although they may welcome encouragement by an encourager . A maintainer is one sympathetic to the gaining community, who has intentionally or unintentionally put on weight and is happy to remain at that size, or is reluctant to gain more. An appreciator is a fat admirer in the gaining community who is not interested in either gaining or encouraging, but is content to appreciate what progress has been made by other individuals.
In some circles, the terms "gainer" and "encourager" are viewed as homosexual terms, whereas "feeder" and "feedee" are viewed as their heterosexual synonyms. While this is a common perception in the weight gain community, it is not a universal attitude, as many heterosexuals who are gaining weight of their own volition, without the aid of a feeder, generally characterize themselves as gainers rather than as feedees. It should also be noted that many participants in the community will use gainer and feedee interchangeably. This is also true of feeder and encourager.
Stuffing
Stuffing refers to the practice of eating until the abdomen is distended. The act of stuffing can cause arousal, this is thought to be due to the pressure within the body upon the sexual organs. Also, as the swollen belly can mimic pregnancy, which is arousing to maiesiophiles.
Interpersonal and commercial aspects
There are hundreds of groups devoted to overweight women, overweight men, and weight gain on sites such as Yahoo! Groups, a number of which cater to teenagers. Dimensions Magazine's website is one example of a site with related Internet forums. There are BBW nightclubs in the United States. There are many pornographic sites, featuring large men or women.
Abbreviations
- BBW (Big Beautiful Woman): an overweight woman who identifies as a BBW . Not all fat women identify as BBWs or want to be referred to as such.
- SSBBW (Super-Sized Big Beautiful Woman): an obese woman, typically much larger than a BBW.
- BBBW (Big Beautiful Black Woman): an overweight black woman
- BBT or BBTeen : a fat female or male teenager
- BHM (Big Handsome Man): an overweight man
- SSBHM (Super-Sized Big Handsome Man): an obese man, typically much larger than a BHM
- FA (Fat Admirer): a person who has a sexual fetish for fatness (as distinguished from a person who simply prefer fat partners). Typically used to refer to male fat admirers, also used in a gender-neutral sense.
- FFA (Female Fat Admirer)
- Gainer : A person who fantasizes about becoming fat, or who gains weight for sexual pleasure.
- Encourager : A person who derives pleasure from encouraging or persuading a gainer to become fatter.
Relation to fat acceptance movement
Some people involved in the fat acceptance movement argue that fat fetishism undermines social movements towards fat acceptance, through counter-productive objectification and dehumanization of fat people. They argue that often, fat fetishists (specifically feeders) derive sexual pleasure from increasing immobility, disability, or helplessness in the fat person through weight gain. Some people take issue with the coercion which is sometimes involved in fat fetishism.
NAAFA draws a distinction between fat fetishism and fat admiration: NAAFA states that "a preference for a fat partner is as valid as any other preference based on physical characteristics", but also condemns feederism as coercive. NAAFA advocating that people "celebrate the current weight of their partner as one aspect of the whole person".
