The Sisters Family Cookbook is a cookbook written by seven sisters. It is known for its southern style recipes. After its initial publication, proceeds from sales of the book were redirected to pay for the kidney transplant of one of the writers.
The “Sisters Family Cookbook” is a well known cookbook compiled of southern recipes from seven sisters originally out of Hogansville, Ga. “Martha Hale, Becky Ott-Carden, Ellen Hubbard, all of Hogansville, Shirley Williamson of Newnan, Bobbie Williams of Statesboro, Joyce Harlin of Chattanooga, Tennessee, and Willie Todd of Lexington, Kentucky,” did not initially intend for their cookbook to help save one of their own lives. The book was born in 1986 when Shirley Williamson and her six sisters spent their first annual sisters' reunion at the Marriott at Times Square in New York City, compliments of their nephew who worked there. For 23 years thereafter the tradition of an annual “Sisters Gathering” took the family to Nashville, Chicago, Dallas, St. Augustine, Kentucky, and a Caribbean Cruise for the sisters and their mother, Annie Williamson. In 2005 the sisters were determined to not let their mother’s disability, a broken hip requiring her to use a wheelchair, call off the annual trip. They wheeled her aboard a cruise and set out on a vacation that would eventually change their lives forever. One sister, Joyce Harlin, even persuaded her husband to reschedule an already planned and reserved anniversary trip to Hawaii because it was at the same time as the “sisters trip”. In 2006 after being urged by family and friends to publish their southern style recipes into a book the seven sisters chipped in $157 each to make their dream come true. May 2006 their “sisters gathering” encompassed birthdays, safe return of family member from Iraq, and publication of the “Sisters Family Cookbook”. To begin with the sisters ordered 300 copies thinking that they would certainly gather dust in the closet. Much to their surprise the cookbooks “sold like hotcakes” and since then more than 6,000 copies of the first book have been sold. “The first copies contained recipes from each sister, with a healthy dose of humorous trips and quotes, famous wise sayings, helpful kitchen pointers and heartwarming stories and poems all crowded together in a three-ring binders with a picture of the sisters on the front.” Shirley Williamson, one of the sisters, found out in September 2006 that she needed a kidney transplant and had to go on dialysis. Shirley was told that the transplant would cost $10,000 up front and that did not include the medicine after the surgery. Since that day the proceeds from the books have gone to the medical expenses of Shirley’s kidney transplant.Thanksgiving Day of 2007 Lena Drake, great niece of Shirley Williamson, announced that she would be the kidney donor for her aunt’s transplant. After praying real hard about the required physical and psychological test, Lena knew she was the one. The following January Lena Drake was told she was a positive match and a month later she was cleared to donate one of her two kidneys. March 2008 Shirley Williamson was given another chance to have a life that she dreamed of. Later on in the year the sisters compiled another book, “Sisters Family Cookbook Second Helping,” with almost twice the number of recipes. When the first copies of the book arrived, all the sisters gathered to dedicate the book to Lena Drake. More than 1,000 copies of the second book have been sold. You can now buy the first book for $10, the second for $12, and both for $20.
In the back of the “Sisters Family Cookbook: Second Helping” is a section called “Something Special”. This section was written by Willie Todd, one of the sisters, and has a short story about each one of the sisters and their childhood memories. Below, in descending order of age, is a summary of each section describing all seven sisters.
Martha, the oldest of all the sisters, is recognized for having “little mother” syndrome. As a child she took care of the cooking when their mom was either sick or having another baby. Martha was also a good singer when she was a little girl and sang wherever her daddy was preaching. Most people that knew Martha knew she did well in school and Mrs. Brown, her seventh grade teacher, never let the remaining siblings forget that. The youngest siblings seemed to catch it the worst from Martha when she was an extremely ill and cruel pregnant woman with her husband, Nathan, overseas.
Willie is known for her spontaneous attitude. It was Willie’s idea to do the cookbooks for the children. Also, she is constantly recording information for the children to look back on and remember the “Sister’s Trips”. Her husband’s job has taken them all over the United States but she will never forget the small town of Hogansville, Georgia, where she grew up. One year on a “Sisters Trips” Willie presented her sisters with a book called “Earth Angels” that she had written which had something special about each sister.
As a child Shirley was known for her flair for style and ability to look good in anything whether it be a feed sack or mini skirt. She was always be up to something with her two best friends and even tried playing hooky from school in the living room. Later on in life Shirley experienced more pain than some do their whole life. She lost her only son to cancer and then had to undergo a kidney transplant. Fortunately, Shirley kept her strength in the Lord and her faith has kept her going stronger than ever.
Joyce (“The Artist”) can just about draw or paint anything. She went by Ruby Joyce in high school but eventually dropped Ruby and went by Joyce. She is very talented and creative in everything that she does. As a single mother Joyce raised two boys. The only flaw that Joyce has is her terrible timing.
Becky, aka “The Rebel”, was always getting in trouble. The sisters can remember Becky tricking her mom into thinking she had been stabbed by using ketchup for blood. Becky is known for her confidence and strength. She is a private person but someone to lean on in times of trouble. She raised two daughters as a single mother.
Ellen (“The Rock”) was always the calm one with great patience. She was very close to Bobbie as a child and always sensitive to other’s feelings. Ellen is known as the rock because she has always been so steady.
Bobbie who is the youngest and (“The Humorist”) will laugh at herself before anyone else has a chance to. She has always been known to make you laugh until your side cramps. Bobbie went back to school when she was 30 and got her college degree and then her masters to become a teacher. She always feels like she cannot get a word in when everyone is together.
These recipes were published in the Georgia Magazine October 2009 edition for public view and use.
