Main article: Brad PittThroughout the 1980s and the 1990s, Pitt was romantically linked with many actresses such as Robin Givens, Jill Schoelen, and Juliette Lewis. Pitt was also engaged to Seven co-star Gwyneth Paltrow, whom he dated from 1995 to 1997.
Pitt met Friends actress Jennifer Aniston in 1998 and the pair married in a private wedding ceremony in Malibu on July 29, 2000. Despite being considered a rare Hollywood success, the relationship came to a close when, in January 2005, Pitt and Aniston announced that they decided to separate after seven years together. When filing for divorce two months later, Aniston cited irreconcilable differences as the reason for their separation.

Jolie and Miller separated the following year and subsequently divorced on February 3, 1999. On May 5, 2000, she married American actor Billy Bob Thornton, whom she had met on the set of Pushing Tin . Jolie and Thornton divorced on May 27, 2003. Asked about the sudden dissolution of their marriage, Jolie stated, "It took me by surprise, too, because overnight, we totally changed. I think one day we had just nothing in common. And it's scary but... I think it can happen when you get involved and you don't know yourself yet."
Jolie has publicly stated that she is bisexual and has commented on her sexual relationship with Foxfire co-star Jenny Shimizu in the media. In 2003, asked if she was bisexual, Jolie responded, "Of course. If I fell in love with a woman tomorrow, would I feel that it's okay to want to kiss and touch her? If I fell in love with her? Absolutely! Yes!"

Pitt and Jolie met on the set of the 2005 film Mr. & Mrs. Smith and their association became subject of a much-publicized Hollywood scandal.. It was alleged that the couple had started an affair while Pitt was still married to Jennifer Aniston. Pitt and Jolie have separately denied this on several occasions, but admitted that they "fell in love" on the set. In an interview in 2005, Jolie explained, "To be intimate with a married man, when my own father cheated on my mother, is not something I could forgive. I could not look at myself in the morning if I did that. I wouldn't be attracted to a man who would cheat on his wife."
In April 2005, one month after Aniston filed for divorce, a set of paparazzi photos emerged that seemed to confirm the rumors of a relationship between Pitt and Jolie. The photos showed Pitt, Jolie and her son Maddox at a beach in Kenya. During the summer, the two were seen together with increasing frequency, and the entertainment media dubbed the couple "Brangelina". Pitt and Aniston's final divorce documents were granted by the Los Angeles Superior Court on October 2, 2005, ending their marriage. On January 11, 2006, Jolie confirmed to People that she was pregnant with Pitt's child and thereby confirmed their relationship for the first time in public. In an October 2006 interview with Esquire , Pitt said that he and Jolie would marry "when everyone else in the country who wants to be married is legally able".
Pitt and Jolie became even more of a media fascination for their social activism and ever-growing family, with the couple adopting from foreign countries. The first baby pictures for Shiloh set a world record. People paid more than $4.1 million for the North American rights, while British magazine Hello! obtained the international rights for roughly $3.5 million; the total rights sale earned up to $10 million worldwide, and was the most expensive celebrity image of all time. All profits were donated to an undisclosed charity by Jolie and Pitt. On July 26, 2006, Madame Tussauds in New York unveiled a wax figure of two-month-old Shiloh; it was the first infant re-created in wax by Madame Tussauds.

On March 10, 2002, Jolie adopted her first child, seven-month-old Maddox Chivan. He was born on August 5, 2001 as Rath Vibol in Cambodia, and he initially lived in a local orphanage in Battambang.
In July 2005, whilst on a trip to Ethiopia together, Jolie and Pitt adopted a child together, a six-month-old girl named Zahara. In December 2005, it was confirmed that Pitt was seeking to legally adopt Jolie's two children, Maddox and Zahara. On January 19, 2006, a judge in California approved this request, and the children's legal surnames were formally changed to "Jolie-Pitt".
The anticipated birth of Pitt and Jolie's first biological child together, Shiloh Nouvel Jolie-Pitt, was cited as the most influential celebrity baby, as the public pondered what the combined physical features of two people who have been cited as the world's most beautiful would produce in a child. Jolie gave birth in Swakopmund, Namibia, by a scheduled caesarean section, on May 27, 2006. Pitt confirmed that their newly-born daughter would have a Namibian passport.
On March 15, 2007, Jolie adopted a three-year-old boy from Vietnam, Pax Thien, who was born on November 29, 2003 and abandoned at birth at a local hospital, where he was initially named Pham Quang Sang. Jolie adopted the boy from the Tam Binh orphanage in Ho Chi Minh City. She revealed that his first name, Pax, was suggested by her mother before her death.
Following months of tabloid speculation, Jolie confirmed she was expecting twins at the 2008 Cannes Film Festival. She gave birth to a boy, Knox Léon, and a girl, Vivienne Marcheline, by caesarean section at the Lenval hospital in Nice, France, on July 12, 2008. The rights for the first images of Knox and Vivienne were jointly sold to People and Hello! for $14 million—the most expensive celebrity pictures ever taken. The money went to the Jolie/Pitt Foundation.

Starting in 2005, Pitt and Jolie's relationship became one of the most reported celebrity stories worldwide. After confirming that Jolie was pregnant in early 2006, the unprecedented media hype surrounding them "reached the point of insanity" as Reuters described it in their story "The Brangelina fever". To avoid the media attention, the couple went to Namibia for the birth of their daughter Shiloh, "the most anticipated baby since Jesus Christ". Two years later, the confirmation of Jolie's second pregnancy again it fueled a media frenzy. For the two weeks Jolie spent in a seaside hospital in Nice, reporters and photographers camped outside on the promenade to report on the birth. Entertainment Weekly put it on its end-of-the-decade, "best-of" list, saying, "Great role selection, a devotion to do-gooding, and a beautiful family: Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt could teach a master class on movie stardom." In February 2010, Pitt and Jolie made plans to sue the British tabloid, News of the World for libel after it published allegations about their relationship.

Robert Thompson, director of the Centre for the Study of Popular Television, said the coupling of A-list stars like Pitt and Jolie, or in years gone by Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton, was "a paparazzi's dream come true". He further relayed that "as silly as it sounds, this new tendency to make up single names for two people, like 'Bennifer' (Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez) and 'TomKat' (Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes), is an insightful idea. 'Brangelina' has more cultural equity than their two star parts."
