KIMT is a CBS affiliate television station serving Mason City, Iowa; Rochester, Minnesota and Austin, Minnesota. Its transmitter is located near St. Ansgar, Iowa. MyNetworkTV airs in prime time on KIMT's digital subchannel.
The station signed on for the first time on May 15, 1954 as KGLO-TV, owned by Lee Enterprises along with the Globe Gazette newspaper and KGLO radio (AM 1300 and FM 101.1). On the station's first day on the air, signals were reported as far away as Gary, Indiana. The station was affiliated with both CBS and DuMont until 1956, when DuMont ceased operations.
In 1975, the FCC ruled that one company could not own all the media outlets in a city, and forced Lee to break up its cluster in Mason City. KGLO-TV was thus sold to B-Y Communications in 1977 and renamed KIMT (which stands for Iowa-Minnesota Television). In 1980, KIMT was sold to the Shott family of Bluefield, West Virginia. However, in 1984, the Shotts sold KIMT and WBTW in Florence, South Carolina to Spartan Communications, giving channel 3 its third owner in eight years. Spartan merged with KIMT's former owner, Media General in 2000.
On April 6, 2006, Media General announced that it would sell KIMT as part of its acquisition of four NBC owned and operated stations. On August 2, 2006, New Vision Television, LLC announced it had bought KIMT and sister station WIAT in Birmingham, Alabama for $35 million. NVT's acquisition of the two stations was finalized on October 12, 2006.
On June 12, 2009, KIMT launched local news in 16x9 standard definition with parts in HD.
As of early 2009, KIMT aired on analog channel 3 and digital channel 42. It opted to keep its analog channel on the air until the new June 12 deadline. After the transition, KIMT planned to continue to use digital channel 42 and filed paperwork with the FCC to eventually increase channel 42's output power from 200 kW to 800 kW, which would more effectively fill the channel 3 coverage footprint. At 12:12 PM June 12, 2009 KIMT ended its analog broadcast.
Early on the morning of June 27, 1995, KIMT news anchor Jodi Huisentruit was abducted outside her apartment while on her way to work. Huisentruit has not been found and the case remains unsolved.
