News Channel 6 Wv

WVVA is an NBC-affiliated television station in Bluefield, West Virginia, owned by the Quincy Newspapers media chain. The station's studios are located in Bluefield, and its transmitter is based at East River Mountain, near the West Virginia-Virginia border. It broadcasts a digital signal on UHF channel 46, which remaps to former analog channel 6 via PSIP.

WVVA also carries secondary affiliations with the CW Television Network and Retro Television Network. The CW is seen on its second digital subchannel (6.2), while the RTN is pending to be seen on this station.

Prior to the launch of the CW network in September 2006, WVVA operated "WBB", the area's cable only affiliate of CW's predecessor, the WB Television Network.

History

The station was founded on July 31, 1955, under the special allocation of a VHF allotment given to Bluefield under the original Federal Communications Commission allotment system. Because of its proposed antenna height on East River Mountain, the Bluefield Channel 6 allocation was short-spaced to WATE-TV, Channel 6, Knoxville. Its original call letters were WHIS-TV , named for West Virginia politician Hugh Ike Shott. Shott died in 1953, two years before the station made it to air and his heirs were channel 6's original owners.

The Shott family controlled not only WHIS-TV but also an AM and FM radio station combination and the city's only daily newspaper, the Bluefield Daily Telegraph . Although their media holdings in Bluefield were considered a monopoly by some, only the newspaper was a vehicle for their conservative political views.

In 1975, the FCC decreed that a single company could not own all of the media outlets in one area, and required the Shott family to break up their Bluefield holdings. In 1979, after four years of litigation, the decision was made to sell the television station, which went to Quincy, Illinois-based Quincy Newspapers. After the sale was completed, the new owners changed the station's call letters to WVVA , which stands for the states which channel 6 serves, West Virginia and Virginia. WVVA continues to be the dominant station in the market's television ratings.

The station ran into some controversy when they refused to air Madonna's 2006 world tour called "Confessions Tour." WVVA reportedly said the concert was inappropriate and felt the viewers did not need to see the show. They showed the Nutcracker instead.

As of September 30, 2009, WVVA can be seen on DirecTV with an HD receiver and a Slimline Dish.

Digital television

On February 17, 2009; WVVA switched to "nightlight" service on channel 6, showing information on DTV and the 6PM newscast. Main operations are on channel 46, remapping to channel 6 using PSIP. This service was terminated in late April 2009.

The station's digital signal, UHF 46, is multiplexed:

WVVA is signed up to add RTN to its lineup, though a date for launch has not been announced.
