Automatic Cream Ice Maker

Mr. Coffee is an automatic-drip kitchen coffee machine that was popular in the 1970s and 1980s. Its advertising spokesman was former baseball player Joe DiMaggio. The device was invented by engineers Edward Able and Erwin Schulze.

Introduced in 1972, Mr. Coffee was the first drip coffee maker made available for home use. Prior to the introduction of Mr. Coffee, most coffee prepared at home in America was made by a percolator, either on a stovetop or plugged directly into a wall socket. Percolators allowed brewed coffee to come into direct contact with heat, resulting in an inferior, burned beverage.

In 1995, a variation was produced by the same company for tea called "Mrs. Tea". The machine differed from Mr. Coffee only in detail as the drip process works equally well for tea as for coffee, although the result is often a darker, samovar type of tea.

History of Mr. Coffee®

Over 37 million households currently own a Mr. Coffee® coffeemaker. Mr. Coffee® was founded in 1968, when Vincent G. Marotta, Sr., and Samuel Glazer founded North American Systems, Inc. as a coffee delivery service.

Marotta came up with the idea for the Mr. Coffee® automatic drip coffeemaker “in 1970 while recuperating from an operation on a benign brain tumor,” according to a December, 1983 biography in Cleveland Magazine. The key to his appliance was the water: it percolated through the coffee grounds at 200º Fahrenheit, as opposed to the boiling water that roiled through grounds in the traditional percolator. North American Systems (NAS) began production of the Mr. Coffee® automatic drip coffeemaker in 1972. This coffeemaker changed the way Americans brewed coffee.

The Mr. Coffee® machine was an instant success. North American Systems sold one million units by April 1974 and captured ten percent of the American coffee-making business. Investment house Bear Steams & Co., Inc. called the coffeemaker, “one of the first convenience appliances that revolutionized food preparation in the 1970’s and 1980s.” North American Systems then acquired the Fairfield Coffee Filter Division of Tomlinson Industries, Inc. According to an October 1979 Forbes article, North American Systems was producing 40,000 units each day.

Total coffee consumption continues to increase in frequency with daily consumption up for a third year to 57% of the US adult population. Page 27© 2007 National Coffee Drinking Trends Report.

In America, coffee is consumed most in the west. Around 87% of coffee drinkers drink coffee at breakfast.

Mr. Coffee® is still playing a large role in the consumption of coffee. After the Mr. Coffee® automatic drip coffeemaker was introduced, Mr. Coffee® added a “Pause n’ Serve” feature in 1986. This feature allowed consumers the first time option to drink a cup of coffee before the pot finishes brewing. In 1989, Mr. Coffee® introduced the Ice Tea Pot TM, the very first automatic ice tea maker. In 2007, Mr. Coffee® celebrated 35 years of business. In 2009 Mr. Coffee® introduced Mr. Coffee® Café Frappe Maker. It is a one –touch frozen frappe maker with freshly brewed coffee.
